![]() I had read the title in countless popular book lists before, ones with names like “Classic Children’s Literature You Must Read” and “Diverse Books for Young Readers.” For some reason I had just never picked it up. ![]() But I just couldn’t put a finger on why.Īfter finishing the book, I remembered: it used to be on display all the time in the library at my middle school, always one of those books the librarians used to keep upright on the tops of bookcases so you could see the cover. Before this past summer I had never read it before, and I had never even really put together that the Sandra Cisneros I read in my Spanish classes in college (that of Woman Hollering Creek) was also the same person who wrote The House on Mango Street. When I stumbled across it in my town’s tiny public library over the summer, the cover immediately looked familiar to me. ![]() The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros has always been one of those book titles that I knew, but I didn’t know how or why I knew it. ![]()
